Ages 11-14/Grades 6-8
This class integrates the history of ancient civilizations with the mythology, legends, and other written texts from each civilization, so students gain a deep understanding of each culture. Students then connect these past civilizations to modern day events and their own lives. Alongside content, students engage in learning how to learn in metacognitive practices including collaborating with peers, assessing their own learning and planning next steps with guidance from peers, class teacher, and home learning coaches.
Topics Covered: Paleolithic Era, Agricultural Revolution, Early Civilizations, Ancient Hebrews, Ancient Greece, Ancient India, Ancient China, Ancient Rome

MS Medieval Humanities
Medieval Humanities

Ages 11-14/Grades 6-8
Explore Medieval times around the world, through historical events and literature. Students will learn about the history of the Middle Ages, including: Roman Empire, Medieval Europe, Islam in the Middle Ages, China in the Middle Ages, Ghana & Mali in Medieval Africa, Medieval Japan, Meso-American Andean Civilizations, and into the Renaissance, Reformation, Scientific Revolution, & Enlightenment. In addition to learning the history of these medieval civilizations, students will read literature from each civilization to enrich understanding of each culture. Students will build skills in historical thinking, research, and academic writing including the writing process in preparation for high school writing assignments. This class covers Standards for both middle school Social Studies and English.
